Genealogy
The Escanaba Public Library offers a variety of genealogy sources. The Library is home to the collections of the Delta County Genealogical Society. In addition to their collections, microfilm census, birth, death, and marriage records are available.
Delta County Death Records is now available online and include records from 1867 to 2010 as recorded in the official records of the Delta County Clerk’s Office. Records can be searched using any part of the name and can be accessed from the library or home. These records are made available through the efforts of the Delta County Genealogical Society.
The Library has local newspapers on microfilm dating back to 1869 with the Escanaba Tribune. We also have film from the Escanaba Iron Port and the Escanaba Daily Mirror both of which were published in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The current local paper, the Escanaba Daily Press dates from the early 1900’s to the present.
The library has an incomplete Escanaba Newspaper Index (1869-1925, 1954-1962,1970-present) available for in-house use, as well as print obituary indices from 1999 to the present.
The library has a subscription’s to two family history databases, Ancestry Library (only available in the library) and My Heritage Library Edition , available in the library and remotely with a library card or Michigan I.D. A workstation with dedicated access to both of these database’s is located in the genealogy section.
The Delta County Genealogical Society maintains the genealogy collections to assist researchers/patrons with genealogical research. The genealogy collection can be accessed by patrons on their own and is for reference only (not available for circulation). The Library has two microform readers for public use.
